In only 67 days, volunteers collected more than 86,000 signatures on petitions to put repeal of LB 1402, the voucher scheme that would divert public tax dollars to private schools, on the November ballot.  That's the shortest timeline to complete a petition process in Nebraska history!

 

But the battle is not over!  We need to be prepared to vigorously defend against any attack brought against the right of the people to exercise their constitutional right to a referendum.  Surveys have shown that Nebraskans strongly support using public tax dollars for public education.  They do not support diverting public tax dollars to private schools. And the Nebraska Constitution specifically prohibits such action!  Article VII-1 states, in part:  “The Legislature may provide for the education of other persons in educational institutions owned and controlled by the state or a political subdivision thereof.” [Emphasis added.]
